    Please join us for our upcoming free Act 48 PD workshops in Philadelphia.

    Essential Supports for Academic Learning
    ACSE office, 1816 Chestnut St., Philadelphia

    Students learn both social and academic lessons in the classroom, and the most effective teachers do both. This sesson examines: what effective teachers do to address the three basic human needs in the classroom; how caring is linked to academic learning; and what concrete, research-based methods can be used to help all students reach their social and academic potential.

  • Kim Johnson, ACSE member at Khepera Charter School awarded National Science Teacher Association Fellowship

    Kim Johnson, known by students and colleagues as Mama Omotayo, is one of 19 Pennsylvania science teachers selected for the prestigious New Science Teacher Academy. The Pennsylvania Fellows will join 215 others from across the country, who were selected from a large pool of applicants for their strong backgrounds in science and interests in growing as science educators. The National Science Teacher Association (NSTA) runs the New Science Teacher Academy, a year-long professional development fellowship program.  According to the NSTA, the program is designed to help promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence, and improve teacher content knowledge.

    Each fellow will receive an NSTA membership package, access to online professional development activities, and a scholarship to the 2012 NSTA National Conference on Science Education.  Mama Omotayo’s fellowship is being sponsored by the Dow Chemical Company.

    Mama Omotayo is a middle school science teacher and robotics team coach at Khepera Charter School in Mt. Airy. She has been an ACSE, AFT member-activist since she worked with her colleagues to form their union in 2010. The members of the Alliance of Charter School Employees are very proud of Mama Omotayo for her commitment to science education and selection as a 2011-2012 NSTA fellow.
